작성일 : 2023-04-03

Global Arbitration Review has unveiled its annual ranking of the world’s leading international arbitration practices.

The GAR 30 ranking was revealed yesterday during the 13th annual GAR Awards ceremony, which took place in-person as part of Paris Arbitration Week. The ranking, alongside a “Power Index” of the top expert witness firms, appears in the now published 16th edition of the GAR 100.

King & Spalding retains the number one spot in the GAR 30 for the third time in the past four years having edged away from fellow serial winner White & Case. The commentary to the ranking analyses how King & Spalding is setting the tone for the top of the ranking.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer returns to third place, switching positions with Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan in fourth.Herbert Smith Freehills in fifth and Clifford Chance in sixth also move up one place each since last year’s edition. Three Crowns is in seventh.

The top 10 sees a newcomer in the form of Gaillard Banifatemi Shelbaya Disputes, taking Wilmer Hale’s eighth position from last year. Debevoise & Plimpton and Baker McKenzie hold the ninth and tenth spots.

The mid-tier sees Dentons, Squire Patton Boggs and Reed Smith all record their highest-ever finishes in our ranking.

The GAR 30 also welcomes back Lalive, CMS, Covington & Burling and Clyde & Co who each gained significant ground to return to the table in this edition.

Wilmer Hale boasts the largest case portfolio followed by White & Case, King & Spalding, Linklaters and Curtis Mallet-Prevost Colt & Mosle. CMS tops the billable hours chart followed by White & Case, DLA Piper, Freshfields and King &Spalding.

As in previous years, the GAR 30 ranks firms primarily on the number of arbitral hearings conducted over a two-year period.Firms receive additional credit for working on higher-value disputes, and for activities that reflect a strong reputation (such as arbitrator appointments received by firm members) and for strong performance during research for GAR’s sister publication, Who’s Who Legal: Arbitration – a guide to the leading practitioners in the field as selected by their peers.

We also consider the number of hours billed to arbitration over a two-year period to inform our analysis.

The commentary analyses a dip in the overall number of hearings as the after effects of covid-19 continue to play out – and we take a look at which firms and types of cases may be influencing a sharp drop in hearings valued over US$1 billion. It also discusses potential future performance of relative newcomers such as Peter & Kim and GBS Disputes compared with older hands such as Shearman & Sterling, Hogan Lovells and WilmerHale.

The Power Index ranks expert witness firms in a similar way, using objective data.

This year FTI Consulting return to the top of the table and Berkeley Research Group rises two places to take second. Compass Lexecon in third and Secretariat in fourth remain in the top five which also sees the arrival of HKA.

The Power Index is accompanied by six other tables breaking the data down further, including analysis of commercial and investment treaty hearings, as well as those in the energy, oil and gas and construction sectors.

The top 10 in the Power Index this year looks like this:

1. FTI Consulting

2. Berkeley Research Group

3. Compass Lexecon

4. Secretariat

5. HKA

6. Ankura

7. Alvarez & Marsal
